Background. The relevance of studying the processes of Islamic revival in the Volga region is caused by considerable influence of the Russian ummah (Muslim community) on ethnopolitical and ethnoconfessional processes in the modern Russian state. The main goal of this article is to identify the general trends and features of development of the Muslim ummahs of four republics of the Volga region – Tatarstan, Mordovia, Chuvashia, Mari El.
Materials and methods. The article is based on scientific publications about Islam in the considered region, and also on the Internet resources, first of all – the official sites and information portals of spiritual administrations of Muslims (muftiyats) of the Russian Federation. The comparative-historical method, allowing to generalize difficult and often internally contradictory processes happening in the modern Russian Islam, was the main research method, which formed the basis of this article.
Results. The author analyzed the features of Islamic revival in the Volga region, and also some destructive factors (organizational splits among Muslims, spreading of religious extremism).
